The mission of RYSE (Refugee Youth Solidarity through Education) is to foster literacy, confidence, and community among K-12 refugee youth in Rhode Island through hands-on, joyful summer learning and leadership development.

Rhode Island has a large refugee population, resettling approximately 100-345 refugees every year. School-aged refugee children face many challenges integrating into the US educational system, especially as many have experienced severe interruptions in formal schooling.

Camp RYSE helps meet this urgent need with hands-on, project-based learning that targets summer learning loss, as well as by forging community among young people with shared experiences of displacement and resettlement.

Save The Bay

Since 1970, Save The Bay’s sole mission has been to protect and improve Narragansett Bay. We envision a Bay that is fully swimmable, fishable, healthy, and accessible to all. One way we work to fulfill our mission is by inspiring the next generation of Bay stewards. Save The Bay’s AmeriCorps Members help us fulfill our mission through service in the Explore The Bay Education Program and the Volunteer Program.

The Explore The Bay Education Program helps students improve environmental literacy, spurs interest and engagement in the sciences, and supports students in becoming environmentally aware citizens. AmeriCorps Members serve alongside a team of full-time educators supporting STEM, environmental education, and stewardship programs for PreK-12 students through school-based, afterschool, and summer programming. Members have the unique opportunity to serve in a traditional classroom setting, at field sites along Narragansett Bay and into the watershed, aboard our Coast Guard certified education vessels, and at our Hamilton Family Aquarium in Newport, RI.

Save The Bay’s Volunteer Program helps connect individuals in the cause of environmental conservation and stewardship while informing them about the importance of our waters and encouraging them to take positive actions to impact the Bay’s health. The Volunteer Engagement AmeriCorps Member helps the organization expand volunteer recruitment and community engagement capacity by helping to implement volunteer initiatives in new communities, identifying new volunteer opportunities throughout the organization, and recruiting new community groups, individuals, and partners to support the organization’s ongoing volunteer initiatives.
